How old is vegetarianism and / or veganism?
Do you know of any tribes or ethnic groups who have been practicing vegetarianism or veganism for thousands of years? I understand that the first modern humans were hunter-gatherers and therefore rely on animal products to survive and spread. At what point vegetarianism or veganism become a viable option option. Is it coincides with the introduction of agriculture?
Hello. A lot of information on vegetarianism former is based on speculation. Some records of the ancient Greeks established that people sew vegetarian diets. Homer and Herodotus mentions the people in northern Africa that only ate lotus plants. Of course, may simply have been the recording of a myth. About 2600 years ago a religion known as Orphism encouraged to avoid meat and the famous Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras (as in "Square of the hypotenuse was …') himself a vegetarian and was known as the "Pythagorean diet", which also include eggs to avoid. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle also are recorded as following a vegetarian diet. His objection is partly due to the meat of ethics and the religious / spiritual – that are not trying to be part of a fashionable health. Of course, we must remember that many ancient cultures had contact with each other and the similarity avoiding egg and emphasis on non-violence is very similar to practices in meat and eggs WHeR Hinduism are avoided by those seeking a spiritually pure life on the principle of Ahimsa (ie, non-violence). The origins mother of these beliefs for thousands of years. It also goes back thousands of years are the other Asian religions including Buddhism, Jainism and Taoism encourage all avoiding meat, not all the same reasons. In Buddhism and Jainism is about respect for life and the principle of Jainism is Ahimsa in comon with the Hindus. I some arguments that we are ", for eating or not eating meat is very unscientific. I think that ancient people did what they could to survive, food was high energy high protein when they could, which included meat. I think that far back in our evolution ancenstry probably find a creature that ate mainly fruits and vegetables – certain physiological characteristics suggest that, as enzymes in our saliva designed to help digest the plants and the inability to synthesize vitamin C (as would have been abundant in foods) in a similar way to how the family of cats do not synthesize taurine, which is abundant in prey animals, but do not eat the fruit – which in turn can make their own vitamin C! Agrigulture development is a very important connection. I think it would be more meaningful to describe ancient peoples as "gatherers / hunters – as they would have less hunting and gathering more, just because hunting is a high energy activity, it may be worthwhile if you can eat whatever catches, but only part is much more to feed everyone back home. It also keeps the meat so it would been waste. Also humans can not survive on meat alone and need other nutrients that have been collected. When agriculture began to food were more abundant, and people could start to develop other technologies – originally intended for farming, but also help store, protect and cooking products. The food might be to last longer and it started to say that people became less dependent on meat. Successful agriculture is based on great wisdom, watching the seasons and the stars when the planting of crops for a good performance. This probably has resulted in the initiation of a priest in communities began dependent on agriculture. I argue that almost everything we consider the characteristics of the great civilizations depend on agriculture. The great temples, cities and health of large numbers of people are a product of agriculture. The ancient Egyptians could have built the pyramids without crops to feed bread and workers beer. If they had tried to feed them to animals that have been hunted not fast enough! Being able to produce large amounts of reliable through agriculture dood we have been able to develop all the technologies that make our lives much easier today (or sometimes more stressful). Thanks to agriculture does not I have to run in a loincloth all day chasing the deer with a bow and arrow. That is only a summary, I guess. But it's a good question and a real answer would take hours and a lot of depth in research.
