Vegetarian …. expectant mother?
ok so here is the deal. Me n my husband are TTC. I was wondering if theres special pills or prenatal vitamins I need or need now before?
Hello, You're a good mother who looks after the needs of your child. The best person to talk to is your doctor about what to eat, what to avoid and what supplements may be right for you .. Pregnant women have special dietary needs if they are vegetarians or carnivores. Iron deficiency is common in both pregnant meat eaters and vegetarians, for example. Among other things, it is also important to get some of folate and folic acid. A document of the American Dietetic Association position http://www.eatright.org/ada/files/veg.pdf on page 755 and 756 says, "Lacto-ovo diets Vegetarians and vegans can meet the nutrient and energy needs of pregnant women. Infants of vegetarian mothers generally have birth weights that are similar to those of children born to vegetarian and birth weight standards (122142143). The diets of pregnant and lactating vegans should contain reliable sources of vitamin B-12 daily. If there are concerns about vitamin D synthesis due to limited sun exposure, skin tone, season, or sunscreen use, pregnant and lactating women should use vitamin D supplements or fortified foods. Iron supplements may be necessary to prevent or treat iron deficiency anemia, that is commonly seen during pregnancy. Women capable of becoming pregnant and women in the periconceptional period is recommended to consume 400 mcg of folic acid daily supplements of fortified foods, or both, in addition to consuming food folate from a varied diet (92). Infants of vegetarian mothers has been reported to have less of the cord and plasma DHA in the children of non-vegetarians, although the functional significance of this is unknown (104,143). Breast milk levels DHA in vegans and lacto-ovo-vegetarian women appear to be lower than levels in non-vegetarians (144). Because DHA seems to play a role in brain development and the eye and a dietary supplement of DHA may be important for the fetus and newborn babies, pregnant and lactating vegans and vegetarians (unless the eggs are consumed regularly) should include sources of precursors of DHA from linolenic acid in their diet (flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, canola oil, soybean oil) or using a supplement of DHA vegetarian (from microalgae). Foods that contain linoleic acid (corn, safflower, and sunflower oils) and trans fatty acids (margarine, food with trans fats) should be limited by these fatty acids can inhibit the production of DHA from linolenic acid (145). "Here is another good page http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/veganpregnancy.htm That's all good advice that you want to discuss with your doctor or a registered dietitian. Besides taking care of your nutrition Generally, if your doctor recommends a prenatal vitamin supplement, ask if they would be suitable http://www.devanutrition.com/vegan_prenatal_multivitamin.html
